The Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office says that it has caught the man they believe shot two of his step-siblings and escaped, investigators say, with the help of his father.

Officials say that Antonio Quarels went into a home on Mill Pond Road owned by his father, Brian Quarels, and shot his step-brother and step-sister, Jonathan and Tina Garcia.

Sheriff Billy Sawyer tells WITN that the father originally told investigators that a man came into the home and shot his two step-children when he refused to open a safe in the home. Sheriff Sawyer says through review of nearby surveillance footage and an interview with Brian Quarels’ wife, that story turned out to be a lie.

Sheriff Sawyer says that the surveillance footage shows Antonio Quarels entering the home, followed by his father. That’s when Sheriff Sawyer says the shootings took place. The two are then seen leaving the home according to Sawyer. Officials say that Brian Quarels waited 30 to 35 minutes before calling law enforcement to report that his step-children had been shot.

Officials say that Antonio Quarels has been charged with 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. We’re told that Brian Quarel has been charged with 2 counts of accessory after the fact, felony assault, filing a false police report, and resist, obstruct, and delay.

Sheriff Sawyer says they don’t have a motive for the shootings at this time.
