A second red wolf has been found dead in Eastern Carolina, and a reward is being offered.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the protected animal was found with a suspected gunshot wound on October 12 east of Belhaven. Killing a red wolf is a federal offense, punishable up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Last month another red wolf was found killed near Creswell in Tyrrell County on September 4th.
The feds are offering a reward up to $2,500 for information on both deaths. Both wolves were wearing radio-collars so their movement could be tracked.
The feds say after being nearly extinct, a re-population program now has about 100 red wolves roaming their native habitats in five counties in northeastern North Carolina.
