Salvation Army Looks To Catch Thieves

The Greenville Salvation Army store says people have been walking up to a donation center and stealing items for months.

Some of those thefts have been caught on surveillance video. In the video you can see three people load up the couch sitting outside the donation center and drive off. Thirty minutes later the same group of people return in a different truck to take the second couch left on the property.

Signs on the property clearly state all items in and around the drop box and building belong to the Salvation Army and removal without permission is stealing.

Captain John Sikes says they've had enough and hope the people responsible will just return it.
"We're going to give them a grace period, we're going to give them until the end of this week--these that are on our video, to kindly bring the stuff back, say 'I'm sorry' and we will not do anything, after that we will have the police involved and we will prosecute if we can track them down."

Captain Sikes says people have been stealing from the property for the past six to eight- months. The items they sell at the store help generate money for energy assistance and food programs.

Really? I thought donations to the Salvation Army were for the less fortunate...seems its about losing the profit. Has anyone thought with the economy that maybe the ones that taking the stuff might actually need it? Maybe they have pride that gets in the way because they've never been in that situation. If the Salvation Army wanted to protect an investment maybe they need to take donations inside.
