Two Bertie County magistrates have been told they may not be reappointed if they continue not turning in money and paperwork on a daily basis.
A state audit of the Bertie County Clerk of Court's Office showed that two of the county's three magistrates were tardy in turning over funds and receipts to the clerk. State law says those funds must be deposited daily.
The audit found two magistrates were late 25% of the time, and half of those were between four and fourteen days late.
Clerk John Tyler told the state auditor that the magistrates have been told that the Chief District Court Judge as well as the Resident Superior Court Judge will be informed of any late submissions in the future and if they continue the clerk will not recommend their reappointments as magistrates.
