A man authorities describe as a career criminal, conning people out of money for decades, is charged with doing it again.
The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office arrested 43-year-old Steve Barfield of Lagrance, after they say he defrauded a woman out of a little more than $1,500.
Investigators say Barfield was a private contractor for an apartment complex in Kinston, and to the victim he also did the hiring.
They say he convinced the woman to hand over the money for worker's insurance.
When the job never came, she reported the information to the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, who says Barfield is a career criminal who has consistently been arrested for similar charges beginning in 1989.
