Deputies say a fake scoutmaster was busted when confronted by the real thing.
Matthew Willis of Davis has been charged with obtaining property by false pretenses after his arrest by Carteret County deputies.
Deputies say Willis was scamming citizens, going door-to-door selling $10 raffle tickets for a chance to win 50 pounds of shrimp. The proceeds were supposed to go to the Boy Scouts.
The man later returned some of the money to several victims, saying there had been some sort of mistake, according to lawmen.
They believe a total of 15 people were scammed out of money, but there may be other victims who have yet to come forward. If you're a victim, call deputies at 252-504-4800.
Willis is jailed on a $15,000 bond.
