Governor Pat McCrory is looking for a new Public Safety Secretary after Kieran Shanahan is resigning, effective July 31.
McCrory's office announced the resignation this morning saying the former federal prosecutor wants to concentrate on his law firm and other business obligations. Shanahan also wants to support his wife in her new capacity as an admiral in the U.S. Navy.
Shanahan. who was appointed in January, came under fire several months ago when it was discovered he was still doing work for his Raleigh law firm. The ECU graduate then took a temporary leave of absence from that law firm.
"The department is stronger now than when Kieran started and we appreciate his service," said Governor McCrory. "I will continue to value Kieran's friendship. He has been an important part of the team. I clearly understand his decision and appreciate the priorities he needs to focus on."
McCrory's office says DPS will be managed by deputy secretaries until a new secretary is named.
