A man who deputies say escaped from them at the courthouse Wednesday afternoon was caught 15 minutes later hiding in a trash dumpster near the police station.
Beaufort County deputies say Gregory Midgette, Jr, of Washington had just been sentenced on drug charges and was being escorted out of the courtroom to be prepped for transport when the man took off.
Deputies chased the 26-year-old man, who was in civilian clothes, down the hall and down the courthouse stairs, but lost sight of him when he left the courthouse.
Additional deputies, along with Washington police officers and state troopers began searching the area and after 15 minutes found him hiding in a dumpster across from the police department on Third Street.
Midgette was charged with felony escape and resisting a public officer. He was put on a $100,000 bond and sent off to state prison to start serving his original sentence.
