Prison Shakeup After Inmate Suicide

A prison administrator has been temporarily reassigned as well as a unit manager at a state prison in Eastern Carolina after an inmate death.

The State Department of Public Safety tells WITN News that Renoice Stancil is no longer the administrator at Bertie Correctional Institution. They say he was moved to the Eastern Region Office in Greenville on Monday.

Unit Manager Eric Greene at Bertie was moved to Nash Correctional Institution on February 27th. He was one of four unit managers that reported to the assistant superintendent.

A D.P.S. spokesman calls the moves "preliminary personnel actions" and the reassignments are temporary. They say the actions are the result of the review at the prison after an inmate committed suicide on February 5th. The state says the review is ongoing.

Stancil was prompted to Bertie in September 2009. Before that he was superintendent at Greene Correctional Institution.

Bertie is a close custody prison for 1,000 adult men and has a staff of around 400.

Ricky Anderson, a retired prison administrator and former deputy director of prisons, is now acting administrator at Bertie.
