The parents of a North Carolina man accused of killing an Illinois woman and taking her body to Virginia say they are grieving the loss of the 18-year-old victim and cannot speculate on the circumstances of her death.

John Mascaro said Thursday that he and his wife, Sylvia Mascaro, considered the victim "like a daughter."

Mascaro's son, 19-year-old Enrico Luciano Mascaro, was charged in the death of Danielle Dennis-Towne after her body was found in his trunk July 15.

The Mascaro's issued the statement offering condolences to Dennis-Towne's family, who they describe as family friends.

John Mascaro had reported the two young people missing from the Mascaro's Nags Head home.

Authorities say Dennis-Towne died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say a woman found dead in the trunk of a North Carolina man's car was an 18-year-old friend who was reported missing with him.

Clifton Forge Police Chief Barry Balser says 18-year-old Danielle Dennis-Towne of Illinois died of a gunshot wound to the head. Balser told The Roanoke Times Wednesday that the medical examiner's office identified Dennis-Towne from dental records.

Nineteen-year-old Enrico Luciano Mascaro of Nags Head waived extradition during a brief court appearance on Tuesday. He will return to North Carolina to face a murder charge.

Police issued a nationwide alert for the pair after Mascaro's family reported them missing on Friday and police found a suspicious scene near his Outer Banks home. Mascaro was arrested that night in Clifton Forge with Dennis-Towne's body in his trunk.

Alleghany County Deputy Court Clerk Tina Dressler said 19-year-old Enrico Luciano Mascaro of Nags Head, N.C., waived extradition during a brief court appearance on Tuesday. Mascaro was scheduled to appear at 2 p.m., but his hearing was moved up in the day.

Authorities have yet to identify the woman whose body was found in Mascaro's trunk on Friday. A nationwide alert was issued Friday for Mascaro and 18-year-old Danielle Dennis-Towne of Steger, Ill., who was visiting Mascaro's family.

The two were reported missing by Mascaro's family, who had last seen the pair Thursday.

Mascaro's attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Previous Story

A man from Nags Head is in a Virginia jail on charges he murdered a woman- who was found in his car trunk last night according to police.

Barry Balser, the police chief in Clifton Forge, Virginia, where the car was stopped says police in North Carolina said to be on the lookout for a 1996 Ford Mustang. They were able to track the car to Clifton Forge using cell phone towers. Chief Balser says after detaining the driver of the Mustang, 19 year-old Enrico Mascaro, they discovered a woman's body in the trunk. The woman's name has not been released, but Nags Head police say the search for Mascaro started when he was reported missing along with an 18-year-old woman from Illinois, Danielle Dennis-Towne.

Police say Mascaro is from Chicago and they believe he was headed there from the outer banks where he most recently lived for about a year.

North Carolina investigators are in Virginia along with the FBI. Mascaro is being held at the Alleghany County Jail charged with murder.

Chicagoan...I think if you have an 18 year old daughter she should go for a walk with Enrico in the woods with a loaded stolen gun..She was shot in the back of the head..more than once..so it didn't go off accidentally. The ticket was sent to her by his parents..he must have begged them so he could do this..premeditated..Thank God N.C. has the death penalty..You trash Danielle and then tell us to leave it alone....I think you are the ignorant one...

#1 u dont have all of the facts, #2 the two were friends since they were little and the young man has never been in trouble and this would be totally out of character for him, he's a good kid. # 3 they still have not identified the body, how do u know its even her, #4 u prejudice idiots, he is an American citizen and born here and happens to be half white also, #5 innocent until proven guilty, #6 you should never go by what the media states because they only need a fraction of the story to print it, #7 what makes you think you are better in North Carolina than anyone from Chicago or anywhere else, he use to live in the suburbs, not in the city, like that really matters at all, he comes from a good family, he has lived there near KittyHawk for over 5 years, maybe North Carolina people he was friends with influenced him if u want to talk that trash, #8 if she was so in love with her boyfriend, why did she lie to him and go visit her good friend. Until you have walked a mile in someone else's shoes, do not judge them. Whatever happened has affected two families for the rest of their lives and they loved them both. Let he without sin cast the first stone. You do not know what really happened, there may have also been someone else involved? Until you have all of the facts, leave it alone. Both families are grieving and do not need any stupid comments from others who do not know what they are talking about.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Nobody should ever have to bury a 18 year old child. We were in Nags Head last week with our 18 and 16 year olds. Be safe and be smart.

I hope this scumbag rots in hell. He's just another piece of typical Illinois trash that we never want down here at the beach again. I can't stand most of the northern transplants who come down here, well to any of NC to begin with.
