An 8-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in Asheville and police have charged the driver with murder.
Police think that 27-year-old Harry Smith Kimmons III of Candler deliberately hit Erica Phillips and her mother with the car he was driving Thursday afternoon as they walked along a sidewalk.
Police say Kimmons was the fiance of the girl's mother, Jennifer Simpson.
Kimmons also is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
The girl died shortly after she arrived at Mission Memorial Hospital.
Police say Kimmons had argued with Simpson shortly before she and her daughter were hit. Simpson was in fair condition at the hospital.
