NEW INFO: Pitt County Woman Accused Of Setting Fire To Her Home

A Pitt County woman has been arrested for setting fire to her home on Monday.

Barbara Garris of Fountain is charged with second degree arson and driving while impaired.

The 50-year-old woman was arrested yesterday after her home on North Stamper Street caught fire in what officials said was a suspicious fire. Neighbors tell us woman rents the home, which received extensive damage.

Fountain Assistant Fire Chief Jason Owens says the fire started in the back outside corner of the home near some debris. He says one of his firefighters saw the woman speeding away in her truck when they arrived on scene. Owens says Garris had been living in the home since Thanksgiving without any electricity or water turned on.

Police Chief Bobby Dildy says they spotted the woman driving on Stamper Street and chased her for a short while before she pulled over. Garris has been charged with second degree arson, DWI, failure to stop for blue lights and siren and driving while license revoked.

Her bond was set at $27,500.

P.S. Where you live does not designate your habits. To the best of my knowledge my sister, Barbara has NEVER done crack or meth. Again, if you have not the facts to back up the statements, your comments ARE ILL-SPIRITED and HATEFUL and may come back to bite you in YOUR future.

Barbara is my sister and has been to college and may know more than some of you who are quick to judge her looks or "alleged" actions. Until you have walked a foot in anyone's shoes don't be so quick to judge one. Thank you for the educators who have the sense to know the true effects that any incident similar to this takes on a family. I thank God daily (since my baptism in October of this year)for sending Jesus to die for our sins, and may he without sins cast the first stone. So be it. Many people have had an awful year and this just goes to prove it could be worse than you think. Look in your own family for someone who YOU MAY GIVE A HELPING HAND HAND TO and don't be so judgmental without knowing any or all the details. Thank you for TRUE FRIENDS.

FOLKS: 1-The fire started outside (per the ass. fire chief) 2-If she had intended to set her own house on fire, then she would of got more than one corner! Trust me, I know HER. 3-I agree with the comments made by the teachers & Amber. The rest is just plain ridiculous and hateful. You have no idea about her individual situation, and life events! ---------------------------

I know the feeling...looking around at this place after the hordes of extended family has turned it upside down and inside out, I'm probably a bottle of Jack and book of matches away from it, too.

To Anonymous ... from what I remember about our criminal justice system, we are all innocent until proven guilty? The title of the article says "accused". Furthermore, say what you will about the crime, but the posts here are mean spirited and ignorant personal attacks on her appearance which has nothing to do with the actual crime she's accused of.

I agree with the other educator! This woman has a child and he is so BRIGHT!! Why must you post these negative things? Things that he may see and read. Grow up! Seriously!

His MOM should care enough to clean herself up and not go around setting houses on fire, then run from the police. Her son can see with his OWN eyes what's she be doing. Don't put the blame on a few silly post on the internet. People need to take responsibilty for what they do. Another old saying-Actions speak louder than words. God bless.

Actually, her appearance has a lot to do with the crime she's accused of because it appears she don't care. Just saying, if it looks like a crackhead, acts like a crackhead, it's a crackhead. Just saying this, while it's still a free country to do so.

I appreciate the fact that your post focuses on the most important issue here, a child that's affected.

While you are all having fun, understand that we are all sinners and make mistakes so be careful before you cast stones. Also, you should know that she is a mother and her child is a very bright and well mannered child. The things you are saying about her are very rude and uncalled for.

I've seen children that are "well mannered" because they'll get a beating if they aren't.

ALL children should be afraid of a good butt-whipping if they don't act as they should. We'd have far fewer criminals.

This woman is always nasty looing when you see her around town. She definitely hangs with the wrong crowd in Fountain. She's always coming out of "crack town" in Fountain on her moped. She may have had a hard life, but she made her own choices on how to handle them
