Pitt County deputies say a Boy Scout leader is under arrest, along with his son.
Deputies arrested Melvin Wetzel and his 17-year-old son, Andrew, on multiple counts of child exploitation charges.
The two are accused of downloading images of minors involved in sexual activity.
According to the sheriff's office, the 64-year-old Wetzel is a nurse anesthetist and a Boy Scout leader. Deputies say his son is a D.H. Conley High School student.
WITN received a statement from the East Carolina Scout Council, which states "the Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s premier leader in youth protection. Every leader receives a background check, and parents must sign off the parent information bulletin in the front of every Boy Scout handbook related to youth protection guidelines. No leader is allowed to meet with any Scout one on one. Every youth contact leader must complete youth protection training, and there is a zero tolerance on any leader or any Scout accused of child abuse. The East Carolina Council officials have removed Melvin Wetzel, a volunteer scoutmaster, from the scouting program."
The father faces 10 counts of sexual exploitation and was released after posting a $100,000 bond. His son's bond was set at $30,000 bond and he was released as well.
