A convenience store owner fought back at a would-be robber Monday night, after he was attacked outside his Pitt County store.
Deputies say it happened around 10:00 p.m. at Hills Convenience Store on Highway 43 South.
The owner walked out the front door of the business to take out the trash, and turned to walk back inside when someone struck him from behind with what appeared to be the butt of a gun.
Deputies say the victim pulled out his own weapon and fired at the attacker, who then ran off to some nearby mobile homes.
There's not a good description yet of the man, as he had a tee-shirt over his face. Deputies are hoping that surveillance cameras outside the store will help them develop a better description.
This is the third hold up or attempted hold up at the business within the past six months, according to deputies.
