N.Y. Couple Accused Of Stealing From Elderly Hurricane Victim

A New York couple has been arrested, after being accused of stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly hurricane victim here in North Carolina.

Police in Albany, New York arrested Stephanie and Anthony Callahan as they got off a bus. Washington police say the two are accused of stealing from a local woman who was displaced by the hurricane.

The victim told police she was staying at a local hotel and had asked the couple for help in repairing her home. The victim later discovered items and a significant amount of cash missing from her room.

The family says the victim is 76-years-old and lived in Belhaven. They say more than $15,000 in cash and jewelry was taken from the woman.

The two, who are from Messena, New York, are jailed in Albany and are awaiting their return to Beaufort County to face charges.
