FIRST ON WITN: First Suspect In Greenville Carjacking Arrested


Police Chief Hassan Aden said one of the two men accused of an overnight armed robbery and carkjacking in a local apartment complex parking lot is now in jail.

Police arrested 40-year-old David Battiste just before 5:30 Tuesday morning.

Chief Aden said as part of the force's crack down on gun violence, officers worked quickly to find the armed robbery suspect and the gun police believe was used in the crime.

Investigators said two men were sitting in a car parked at the Nathaniel Village Apartment complex around 11:45 Monday night when two other men approached the vehicle.

Police said the victims were robbed of cash, personal property, and the suspects also took the victims' vehicle.

Investigators said one shot was fired, though no injuries were reported.

Battiste has been charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit that robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon, and firing into an occupied dwelling of vehicle.

Battiste's bond was set at $1 million ahead of his first court appearance Tuesday morning.

Chief Aden said it will not be long for the suspect's alleged accomplice is also behind bars.

Greenville Police said at this point in the investigation, they do not know if the victims were targeted or if the crime was at random, but believe this is likely an isolated incident.

Police said they had no suspect descriptions to release yet.
