Woman Arrested For Cashing Dead Man's Checks

Investigators say a woman is now in jail after cashing personal checks from a dead man's bank account.

32-year-old Melanie Heath is accused of cashing $730 worth of personal checks from a deceased man's bank account at a local Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store.

Donald Jarman died in 2010 and deputies say the checks were written between March 7th and March 15th of this year.

Sheriff Chris Hill says detectives believe the money was used to supply a drug habit. The sheriff says Heath lived at the dead man's home, along with his son.

Jailers say the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office has charged the Kinston woman with six counts of common law forgery and six counts of obtaining property by false pretense among other related charges.

Heath was arrested August 24th, according to deputies, and is still in the jail under a $95,000 bond.

Her next court date is scheduled for September 9th.
