NC Crime Statistics For 2011 Scheduled For Release

The N.C. Department of Justice is scheduled to release statewide crime statistics for 2011, more than a year after figures showed the rate reached a 33-year low.

A news conference is scheduled for Thursday in Attorney General Roy Cooper's office.

The state compiles annual crime statistics based on data provided by local law enforcement agencies across North Carolina.

Crime was down across the state in 2010, with most major metropolitan areas recording a decrease except for Cary and Gaston County, which saw increases. At the time, Cooper warned that the decline may not last in a climate of budget cutting and layoffs.

Cooper said the training, personnel, technology and tactics that have helped achieve falling crime rates were imperiled by cuts to law enforcement at the state and local levels.
