NC Lab Gets Second International Accreditation

Operations at North Carolina's state crime lab have been accredited by a second agency under stringent international standards.

State Attorney General Roy Cooper's office announced Monday the lab's five-year accreditation by the American Society of Crime Lab Director Lab Accreditation Board. The lab has received previous accreditation from the board, but not under international standards.

The accreditation comes a year after the lab received similar accreditation from another group, Forensic Quality Services.

Cooper's office says the lab is the nation's only full-service state crime lab with accreditation from two international independent accreditation agencies.

The news comes as the Senate passed a budget last week that moves the lab from Cooper's purview to the Department of Public Safety. The main lab is in Raleigh with satellite offices in Greensboro and Asheville.
