NAACP Questions How Bonds Are Set

Several civil rights groups in the east say a man accused of stabbing a Fort Bragg Soldier to death got preferential treatment when his bond was cut in half.

The NAACP and other civil rights groups believe a change is needed after the recent arrest and bond for Christopher Brauer.

Chapter president Calvin Henderson addressed the media about what he and others believe is unfair treatment of people arrested that are not white.

They say after Brauer was questioned by police about the stabbing death of Keyonn Parkin-- he was allowed to go back home to Durham. His bond was also reduced from $1-million dollars to $500,000--something they say wouldn't have happened to someone of a different ethnicity.

Henderson says they will request a meeting with the district attorney and police chief to look at prior cases and compare statistics of arrests and bond amounts for different races.

District Attorney Clark Everett says that he's talked to Henderson and has given him copies of people in jail and their bonds for comparison purposes.

A judge has a statute which lists motive, flight risk, history of violence and other factors--all of which help determine the bond.

This is ridiculous! I'm so sick of the NAACP! They cause more harm in reference to race relations then good. When bonds are posted, there are several things taken into consideration that determines if you get a bond or not. Bond is not a determining factor of guilt or innocence. It's set in place if you're considered a flight risk and to insure that you come back to court. No, everything is not about race, but thanks to the NAACP and other ignorant people (black, white, or other) its going to always be about race. People are people and crime is crime. If you break the law, you should pay the consequences. I don't care what color you are.

The NAACP should just go away. They are a worthless group of people. They say that they are for all people, but they are not.

Wonder why my first comment was not posted. We all know Pitt County court system is corrupt. They set bonds to high for minorities.Everybody can see it.Whether it's firszt offense or not. They had no business letting this Guy leave and then return. This murder is so unfortunate for both families.Twelve mother's have lost a son.To the Naacp, instead of trying to make this about race.Try finding a solution in helping our young black men.Because they are there own worst enemy.

I agree with the NAACP, and I am white! OMG! LOL If it was anyone else, they wold be put under the jail to NEVER get out! I do not care what race you are, if you are accused of murder, I feel that you should not have a bond! Just seems fair. Would you like an accused murderer walking around town to possibly do it again?!

An accusation of murder is NOT a guilty verdict. How would you like to be locked up with no bond for something you did not do? We do not live in Iran, we have a right to a fair trial, and bonds are part of the process. I do not like someone guilty roaming the streets, however unless you have a better system then we must use the one we have. Justice will be done. Oh and BTW the NAACP only comes out when it smells publicity. Nuff said about them.

by Bonds not for punishment on Nov 10, 2011 at 05:05 PM in reply to GiGi
Most people have the wrong idea about bonds. Its not for punishment. Its to make sure that a person returns to court to answer the charges.Unfortunately, most repeat criminals, which happen to be black males (by statistics) fail to appear in court. Even though this guy had a bond reduction, $500,000.00 is not easy to post. NAACP would be much more productive trying to prevent black males from causing crime instead of trying to make it about race.

  • by question??? on Nov 10, 2011 at 01:16 AM
Would the NAACP be making a big deal out of it if it was the black guy that killed the white guy? Or if both of them were black? The NAACP needs to get real, we are all equal, you don't see a white group running around trying to protect white people bc then it would be racism!

I totally agree with Jacobi and Wharf Rat! You guys hit the nail on the head! Maybe Christopher Brauer's bond got lowered for whatever reason, but, not saying it's fair!!
