Mother Calls Kidnapping Case Misunderstanding

A family faces charges after authorities say they conspired to kidnap two children.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 3:00 p.m. on Friday as Christine Cumming's two children - ages 6 and 8 - were coming home from school.

Julia and Ryan Grover are now each charged with two counts of second degree kidnapping in this case, and their father, Charles Grover, is charged with conspiracy.

Deputies say Christine Cummings was sick and had taken medicine, and didn't hear her two children trying to get into their home. They say her landlord called Charles Grover, the six-year-old's father. He in turn called his two children and told them to go pick up the kids.

Deputies say Julia and Ryan Grover asked their friend Heather Garris to drive them to the home, and say Garris agreed, taking her 8-month-old baby along with them. They say when the group arrived at Cumming's home, Garris went inside and the Grovers put the two children into her car and drove away with them, along with Garris' 8-month-old baby.

Christine Cummings calls the whole thing a big misunderstanding, and says she plans to tell court officials that if she's called to testify.

if thy couldn't get into their mothers house, what is the big deal with their father and sibbling taking them to their house? sounds to me like the media has alot of no info on this story! doesn't sound like a conspiracy to me if the mother didn't hear her children trying to get in. what were they suppost to do, stay on the curb til she woke up? not too long ago a father got arrested for falling asleep while his child was in his house and the child walked outside onto the road. he was charged with neglect, how is this any different?

Agree with some other posters that, some details are certainly missing. They 'drove away' where? Why did the two siblings drive off before their friend got back into the car? Who called to report the children 'kidnapped'? Misunderstanding, indeed; I misunderstand.

I don't know the whole story, but if the two drove off with the Garris's car and baby while she was inside then there is something besides a misunderstanding. I don't care if the baby was there nephew. And if the landlord called them to come get the kids then there would not be charges.

@Me, I wasn't involved in this. Don't forget to vote for me in the next election! But my friend's wife who lives near the incident couldn't get anything done today because she was too excited and kept looking out the window at the festivities.

okay first off its being called a misunderstanding because thats exactly what is is! Heather Gariis isn't just a "friend", she's their older brothers fiancee, and her baby is their nephew! The kids weren't even picked up from their house, they were at the landlords. Ryan, Julia and Chuck were just looking out for the best interest of the girls, and it got turned into something completely different. This isn't fair for anyone involved, especially the children. the media needs to get the whole and COMPLETE story!

A lot of unanswered questions here. If it was just a misunderstanding, why were they arrested? Wouldn't the "sick" and "medicated" mother have to agree to press charges after the children were found?
