Military Funeral Gunfire Causes School Lockdown

An elementary school here in the east was put on lockdown after gunfire was heard in the area.

La Grange Elementary School went on lockdown around 10:30 a.m. It turns out the gunfire was from a military funeral at a cemetery across the street.

A letter is being sent home to parents from the assistant principal telling them at no time were any of the 570 students or staff in danger and they are very proud of the way the children responded to the possible emergency.

I guess we need to be thankful that cars & trucks don't backfire very often anymore. (thank God for electronic fuel injection)

For the guy that thinks state law says you can't have arms in a funeral or parade, well if a soldier is on duty he can have a weapon federal law supersede state law anyway.

I can understand how this happened. It's the times, people; it's just the times. Better to be safe than sorry, or sued.

Its a shame when our Military, who gave their life for this country, can't even have the funeral they deserve!!!! Either somebody trying to cause trouble for the families by marching, or somebody doing something stupid!! The school needs to have somebody to notify them if there is going to be a military funeral. Doesn't the school know there is a cemetery nearby. Could have all been prevented with a little PPPPP!!! (Previous Planning Prevents Poor Performance) PS @ Vince. Why should they arrest our military for honoring a dead soldier???

Ann- the military is not required to inform anyone when they are conducting a funeral in a cemetery. I am the funeral coordinator at my unit, however we inform the police if we are going to have a detail outside a cemetery but not inside one.

Sarcasm, Ann, sarcasm. A kid takes an aspirin to school and he gets expelled. The school system is too sensitive sometimes.

Did they arrest the military folks firing the weapons? That would be the logical thing to do based on past actions of school officials and enforcement agencies when this kind of thing happens. And, yes, thanks to the deceased for your service to our country.

Then how did the deceased get military honors? Did you even read the article? Did you even get the sarcasm in my post?

Sounds like some paranoid ladies must be operating that school.

Well with hunting season here I guess all the schools will be on lock down. Its just a shame this country has changed like it has most of the people over react to everything.
