Meth Lab Busts Hit Record Level

An arrest recently makes four meth lab busts already this year in Wayne County, and statistics show meth lab busts are up across the state.

The SBI says there were a total of 235 labs busted statewide in 2010. Last year that number was 344, a record number. We have already had 62 through the first two months of 2012.

Law enforcement officers say better technology, aggressive police work, and community help have all lead to more arrests.

Attorney General Roy Cooper also says an easier way to produce the drug methamphetamine has prompted the record number of meth lab busts across the state.

In 2006 new laws were passed restricting the purchase of a key ingredient to make meth. Cooper says the laws are effective in curbing large-scale meth operations. But a method where the drug can be mixed in two-liter soda bottles means the overall number of operations has grown.
