Mebane Man Charged With Making Moonshine

Alamance County deputies say they arrested a 60-year-old Mebane man after he sold undercover agents some moonshine.

Reports say undercover agents visited Larry Anderson earlier this month after getting an anonymous tip he was selling liquor without a license.

The agents say they Anderson took them to a locked building on his property after they asked to buy moonshine and gave them a sample. Investigators say the men then bought two jugs of liquor for $70.

Deputies say they returned to Anderson's land after getting a search warrant and found 19 plastic jugs they say contained moonshine.

Anderson was charged with five misdemeanors. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

What in the world do bootleggers in India have to do with this story? Its illeal because its non tax paid alcohol. When was the last time someone robbed a gas station to buy bootleg?

He's trying to say that the moonshine made in the 'sticks' isn't regulated for quality assurance. Would you buy food from someone who isn't subject to government sanitation inspections? It boils down to this (accidental pun); homemade anything isn't given inspections for cleanliness of workers/equipment/ingredients/process. The poster was just using India's story as an example. The guy should have just kept his secret pals in on it, and labeled it 'Drink At Your Own Risk'.

You can make bootleg for yourself...... w/o profit although - the law may have changed. Watch your reality TV, they make it all the time and no - one seems to worry about the 'maker' or the 'consumer'. I am sure that selling it would jeapordize a state law......hech they are inenough finacial trouble anylway. Just a thought.

You can NOT make Moonshine. It is illegal to MAKE and SELL. However, you can make all the homemade wine you want to, just can't sell it. The law has not changed, it's always been illegal. As far as the Reality shows, they're all scripted and made for TV. Don't believe what you see on TV is always true. Don't you think if a camera crew was riding with the Shiners and the LEOs, the LEO would serve a search warrant on the cameras crews electronics to see where they're also filming the stills.

You CAN NOT make ANY amount of non tax paid spirituous liquor, (moonshine) not even for personal possession and consumption. You CAN make all the home made beer and wine you want as long as you do not sell it. NCGS 18B-111, 18B-304(b)(3), 18B-306. And you can lose anything used to make, store or transport any amount of non tax paid liquor. NCGS 18B-504. Know what you are talking about before you post.

Let's press Citizens Arrest charges against the LEO's for knowingly purchasing illegal shine. Don't have a stroke, that was sarcasm!

AFAIK, there are no "citizens arrest" provisions in NC law.

okay, this guy is not out shooting people, he is not robbing people, he is not dealing drugs... why can't we put our task forces on stopping these crimes instead of harassing some old dude with 5 gallons of shine?

good post, I agree...the poor guy was just trying to make extra money. the other thug, that stole from the Salvation Army, is already out in the street..wonder what happened to this guy. hope he gets a slap on the wrist and finds another place to do business. look at what is going on in the communities, robbery, drugs, etc, and the police ignore these things. Its always going after the little people..while more up scale crime is being ignored.

Yes, he is dealing a drug..alcohol. It can mess your life up just as bad as pot, crack or any other drug you can think of. Only difference is that it is legal to buy, where as the others are not. This guy was selling a drug illegaly. Plain and simple.

yes, alcohol is a legal drug, but then again so is caffeine.. you gonna arrest me for selling a can of coke? the point of my post was to say that a guy with 5 gallons of Shine should be on a back burner while they focus on more serious crimes... like Jay-walking or something.

Can YOU make caffeine or a can of coke. Will a can of coke or caffeine cause someone to run head on into another car or tree if they drink too much of it. Will a can of coke or caffeine cause someone to go blind or kill someone if YOU make it wrong. But hey.. if it's ok by YOU let's give people wood alcohol to drink. After all, according to YOU it's no worse than coke or caffeine.

From the washington post - SANGRAMPUR, India — Bootleg liquor containing toxic methanol killed 143 people and sickened dozens more who drank the cheap, illicit brew bought at small shops in eastern India, officials said Thursday. Police arrested 10 suspected bootleggers. Of course YOU would just give them a slap on the wrist, a pat on the head and tell them to not be naughty wouldn't YOU - http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia-pacific/batch-of-bootleg-liquor-laced-with-toxic-methanol-kills-102-people-in-eastern-india/2011/12/15/gIQAxnGUvO_story.html?hpid=z4

The reason shine stays popular is not due to the fact that its cheaper but because most of it is far better than anything store bought. Its good enough to keep folks coming back again and again. I'm willing to bet if some of it could be marketed it would put them liquor makers up north out of business. Well I'm out at work see yall later. Cheers!

They already do. It's called "Georgia Moonshine" or "Georgia Moon". It's in the ABC stores and it says on the label "Less than 30 days old". It's good if you like that sort of stuff. Taste a little harsh to me.
