A man charged with first-degree murder in the death of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson wasn't even a suspect initially.
Chapel Hill police investigator Celisa Lehew testified in the trial Monday that there was an initial list of 12 suspects in the 2008 killing, and that Laurence Lovette wasn't among them.
She said police arrested Lovette after his name was volunteered by his girlfriend, and after he was mentioned in a Crime Stoppers tip.
Carson, a native of Athens, Ga., was shot to death on March 5, 2008, after she was abducted and robbed.
Lovette's co-defendant, DeMario Atwater, pleaded guilty last year and was sentenced to life in prison. Lovette has pleaded not guilty.
