Man Testifies Murder Suspect Scared Co-defendant Would "Tell Police About Him"

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) -- A friend of Laurence Lovette has told a jury about the time he spent with the defendant as police issued a warrant for his arrest in the death of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that 20-year-old Jayson McNeil told jurors that Lovette called him on March 12, the day a warrant was issued for his arrest. McNeil said Lovette was worried that DeMario Atwater would tell police about him.

The 25-year-old Atwater pleaded guilty last year in the case and was sentenced to life in prison.

Carson was shot to death in March 2008. Co-defendant Lovette has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors contend Lovette was Atwater's accomplice.
