Five young men and two juveniles have been charged after police say a Tarboro man was critically injured with a brick.

Police say Edward Plasencio was not only hit in the head with the brick, but also kicked and punched after he was down on the ground.

It happened Thursday around 8:30 a.m. Police say a juvenile robbed another at the Tarboro Quick Shop and the 29-year-old Plasencio was sticking up for the juvenile victim. Some time later eight people ganged up on the man at the Mobile Home Estates on Dunbar Road.

Jeremy Williams, Shaquell Burney, Holland Dancy, Cedric Dozier and Eric Brady have all been charged with felony assault inflicting serious injury.

Plasencio was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he is in critical condition.
