Man Charged With Assaulting Deputies With Machete

A man is in jail after deputies say he took a machete to a car, and then assaulted officers as they tried to arrest him.

William Ferrell is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, going armed to the terror of the people and injury to personal property.

Deputies say around 8:00 p.m. Sunday they were called to Third Street in Pollocksville to reports of a man damaging a car with a machete.

They say the man charged both deputies and swung the machete at one of them. Fortunately, the deputy was able to dodge his attack and both moved away and called for back up.

Deputies say the man then began to move through the neighborhood with them following at a safe distance.

After back up arrived there was a short standoff. Once the man dropped the machete he was ordered to the ground at gunpoint and taken into custody after a brief struggle.

He's jailed on a $40,000 bond.

I wasn't there but I would imagine that the officers didn't want to put up with all the BS that goes with an officer involved shooting. First they would be suspended, then they would be investigated. Of course they would have been cleared but then the law suits would come from the defendant or his family. The smell of money always gets the sharks circling. Even if the family did not consider suing, some vulture attorney would talk them into with promises of lots of money. Then, while all of this, the officer would have to read comments on this and similar forums about how he should have shot the machete out of the guys hand or how he should have shot to wound. He would read comments from people talking about how cops are stupid and a bunch of jack booted thugs. If the officers picture was posted, he would have to read comments from anonymous people who comment about how stupid he looks and how his mother should have aborted him. Yes, I have read comments like this about other law enforcement officer over the years. I doesn't matter how the officer handles his job, someone is going to complain or criticize when he does his job. I'm glad these officers are okay and went home at the end of their shift.
