Man Charged With Assaulting Deputies With Machete

A man is in jail after deputies say he took a machete to a car, and then assaulted officers as they tried to arrest him.

William Ferrell is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, going armed to the terror of the people and injury to personal property.

Deputies say around 8:00 p.m. Sunday they were called to Third Street in Pollocksville to reports of a man damaging a car with a machete.

They say the man charged both deputies and swung the machete at one of them. Fortunately, the deputy was able to dodge his attack and both moved away and called for back up.

Deputies say the man then began to move through the neighborhood with them following at a safe distance.

After back up arrived there was a short standoff. Once the man dropped the machete he was ordered to the ground at gunpoint and taken into custody after a brief struggle.

He's jailed on a $40,000 bond.
