A local man accused in two counties for the rape of a teen is due in court Monday.
Melvin Byrd, 38, of Ayden is charged in both Pitt and Carteret counties for multiple sex crimes against the same girl, who was 16 at the time of his arrest. Deputies also said the girl was "physically helpless."
Byrd is accused of statutory rape, statutory sex offense with a minor, indecent liberties with a child, crime against nature, felony child abuse involving a sex act, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
A grand jury indicted Byrd on the sex crime charges. He is due in Pitt County Superior Court Monday.
Melvin Byrd was arrested last week for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl who deputies say was physically helpless.
Now deputies in Carteret County have charged the 37-year-old man with seven warrants accusing him of statutory rape, statutory sex offense with a minor, indecent liberties with a child, crime against nature, felony child abuse involving a sex act, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. They say Byrd took the same victim to the Stella area in 2010 for the sex acts.
He remains in the Pitt County jail under a $5-million bond.
A Pitt County man is behind bars under a $500,000 bond, accused of raping a 16 year old girl.
The Sheriff's Office says they received a call to Pitt County Memorial Hospital on Sunday about a rape.
The investigation lead them to 37-year-old Melvin Bryd of Ayden. Detectives say he raped the girl, who was physically helpless.
He's charged with three different sexual offenses and detectives say there could be more charges against Byrd.
