Man Accused Of Exposing Self To School Bus

Deputies say a man exposed himself to a bus load of middle school students this morning.

Calvin Smith, Jr. of Newport is charged with one count of felony indecent exposure by a defendant over 18 to victims under 16.

Carteret County deputies say Smith lives on Old Airport Road and the school bus routinely stops in front of his home to turn around. They say this morning the 57-year-old Smith was standing in front of his glass storm door completely naked as the bus was making its turn. Deputies say Smith knew the pattern of the bus and intentionally exposed himself to the students.

Captain Jason Wank said that most people believe that it is not considered indecent exposure if you're inside your own home. But, North Carolina General Statute 14-190.9 says that “a public place is a place that is viewable from any location open to the view of the public”.

Smith is jailed on a $10,000 bond.

This is by far one of the dumbest arrests ever made. Parents should be more concerned about what their children do on their smart phones, laptops, and televisions rather than a man in his own house. It should have only been a joke on the bus. Not a joke in the news.

this generation of middle school kids are very different than we were at their age. I would have been offended, but also like WOW a naked man... sooo thats what it looks like?? my kid and friends would have been laughing their butts off and the boys would be cracking jokes bout the size of his equipment. no matter how much you try and protect your kids at this age they are gonna do and see what they want, somehow. and most have seen naked bodies before. WAS it wrong... yes and no. he was in his OWN house, but he was in front of the door where all could see. felony charge... no

So, let me pose a question. IF this guy had a big screen TV with porn showing through the window would the reaction have been the same? You can see what people are watching on tv if the blinds are open. What do you guys think about that?? Where do we draw the line at what can be done in your own home? If he did it on purpose I agree it was not right but what if he just woke up and was testing the weather not realizing the bus was right there. I find myself running through the living room naked to go get something out of the dryer on occasion only to find my husband has left the blinds open...Sometimes things like this just happen with no intent behind them whatsoever!

You know what they say about opinions - my opinion is they're gonna have a hard time proving intent. It's also my opinion IF it had been done by a female nothing would have been said OR done.

Not referencing the legality of it- just wondering- this guy, if he was intentionally exposing, and all the flashers across all time: What is the perceived benefit to doing this? Everyone does every thing they do for a reason...they want to, they are hungry, nature calls... So what did the whole class of this crime performers, think is the joy, benefit, profit- the motivation, to doing it? Are the stupid enough to think flash and one will come offer herself later tonight? Or what or what??? I just do not get it.

Dude was in his own home....this is highly disturbing. I hope the case is dropped, that's an asinine law.
