Man Accused Of Assaulting Deputy Sheriff

A Newport man is in jail after authorities say he assaulted a Carteret County deputy sheriff.

Deputies say on Tuesday they were trying to arrest Vincent Rizzi on an outstanding warrant when he resisted arrest on his front porch. They say during the struggle Deputy Jamie Willis had to use pepper spray on Rizzi The man is accused of trying to remove the deputy's gun from his holster.

The deputy was incapacitated from a blow back from the pepper spray and Rizzi was able to get away. Responding deputies quickly spotted the man and took him into custody at gunpoint.

Rizzi has been charged with assault on a government official, fleeing to elude arrest, resist, obstruct, and delay a law enforcement officer, along with the original charge of assault on a female. The 56-year-old man is jailed on a $21,000.00 bond.
