Man Leads Deputies On High Speed Chase Driving Wrong Way On U.S. 70

Deputies say a man who led them on a high speed chase down U.S. 70 was drunk and driving the wrong way on the four lane highway.

Donald Woods, Jr. is facing numerous charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, felony fleeing to elude arrest, DWI, and reckless driving to endanger.

Deputies who were working security at the Waffle House first spotted the man around 3:50 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot. As one deputy walked to the rear of the man's vehicle to call in the registration plate, they say Woods threw his vehicle in reverse. Deputy Thomas Stanley quickly moved out of the way to avoid being hit.

Deputies say Woods then drove toward Kinston in the eastbound lanes at high speeds. They say the Kinston man stopped near Falling Creek and was arrested. Deputies say the man had a .20 blood alcohol content, more than two times the legal limit.

Kinston police say they are looking at Woods to see if he's involved in an armed robbery that happened less than an hour before his encounter with Lenoir County deputies. In that case the victim was confronted by a man armed with a shotgun outside his Edgehill Avenue home. The gunman demanded money and then ran away.

Woods was jailed on the chase and DWI charges and has a $65,900 bond.
