A man accused of killing and dismembering a Kinston mother has fired his second attorney.
Grant Hayes of Raleigh is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Laura Ackerson, and taking her body parts in a rented U-Haul to Texas where they were found in a creek.
Hayes gave a letter to a Wake County judge today saying his court-appointed lawyer hasn't done what he's asked and wants "a black attorney from Durham." Hayes fired his original attorney earlier this year.
The man's wife, Amanda Hayes, has also been charged with the death.
The victim and Hayes had been in a custody battle over their children, but no motive has been released for the murder.
