Leap Sends Craven County Jail Inmate To Trauma Center

An inmate was flown to a trauma center this morning after falling some nine feet to a concrete floor.

Craven County deputies say Albert Lewis was being let out of his cell around 9:30 a.m. to see a nurse when he jumped off the second floor. Jailers are not sure why Lewis jumped.

The man was unresponsive and he was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Deputies say he's now being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Lewis was put in jail back in June on charges of breaking and entering, second degree trespassing and larceny.

Authorities say this is the first time something like this has happened at the jail on Clarks Road which opened a couple of years ago.
