Lawmen: Copper Wire Suspects Caught After 3rd Break-In Attempt

Lawmen say the thieves who stole thousands of dollars worth of copper and caused even more damage at an industrial site in the east are now behind bars after the two allegedly came back for more.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says 20-year-old William Green III of Stokes and 53-year-old Steven Newman of Vanceboro broke into an industrial site on July 13th and stole 7,000 worth of copper wire. In the process, police say they caused $100,000 worth of damage.

Lawmen began a surveillance operation after a second breaking and entering was reported and say at 1:30 Friday morning investigators spotted Green and Newman approaching the site with what they described as tools for burglary.

The two face a number of larceny and breaking and entering charges.

Well I'm just going to say this if it was at the river or close to the river they got them on camera stealing wire. They used video, so they are not going to charge someone that is innocent when they are using video cameras to catch these theifs. SO THE BROKE DOWN CAR ISN"T GOING TO WORK< EVER HEARD OF CAUGHT ON CAMERA> IT IS WHAT IT IS

william im very sorry this has happened to you.i knew even when it broke on the news that there was more to the story than had been told.hold your head high because people who know you know you would have never done anything like that and the people who are makin stupid comments dont know you at all and it doesnt matter what they think are a very fine boy and have done alot of good things for people and we all love you and are glad you are home continue on with your life because once this goes to court it will all be put behind you.i dont think there is no judge stupid enough to convict you when they hear the case and they should be made to return the bond money to your parents.i hate your car broke down there and no people he wont on the property but walking in the field the opposite direction of the building and noticed the officer and walked toward him thinking he could get some help.i hope you people never break down and go through what this kid had to go through.i want your family to know that you are all in our prayers we know god will look after all of you as much as you all have done for other people.

I have know William for several years. He is a great guy and will continue to be. I don't know the other gentleman so I will pass no judgement on him.If you don't know all the facts you need not say anything. WITN will be sure to broadcast this but when they get off nothing will be said. that is because they don't want everyone whose has judged them to feel stupid. I really hate this and agree will rolltide. People need not to judge someone until all the facts are in. So people get a grip on your stupidity. Hope William willbe home soon. They family miss you bunches!!!!

I find it rather humorous that some of you are pointing fingers and talking about people you do not know! Anyone with intelligence would not speculate, they would wait for the facts to come out…Using a screwdriver to steal copper is far fetched. Also, since some of you seem to think you know everything, on the 13th are you sure of the ware bouts of these two men? Or are you just assuming you know? You know what they say about assuming!

i have watched witn all my life and thought all of your reports were facts how disapointed to find out that you dont tell the whole story starting with the so called tools for cutting copper would consist of a screwdriver used to pop a hood of a car that was broken down and was in the back floor board in which was in a car that wasnt even on that property but across the street.when you people get up here and call people crack heads know what you are talkin about.if the news would tell all the facts you would all feel stupid.also seven thousand dollars worth of copper was missing but i want the state to show were either one of these men sold it.ever who was stealing copper from that building are still out there and it will be proven so i hope that witn will report on the story when they are found not the way somebody knows what you need to build crack pipes i didnt even know until i seen that comment maybe they need to be worried about citizens like that.mind your own buisness because they are taxpayers as well.

Besides, the car didnt have to be on the property. If they, themselves were on the property and caught in the act of or attempting to steal the copper, they can be arrested. And believe me, they might hadnt got around to stealing it, but, the police had to have some probable cause to arrest them. They just dont see you standing on the street across from somewhere and arrest you for standing there. Their car must have been one place, and them another. Apparently they were not where they were suppose to be. And if the car was broken down, and the hood was up, why was the screwdriver in the car and not up at the hood area where they were working on it. Im sure if the hood was up and the police came up and no one was working on the car, and they realized the people that were suppose to be working on it were over on someones property unlawfully, yes they did arrest them. The police might and I say might have made a mistake, but please dont test the intelligence of people. And yes it is the publics business, when the tax dollars of working people like us, have to pay to feed and look after people in jail. Its pathethic.
