Kindergarten Teacher Charged With Camden County Sex Offenses

A kindergarten teacher in Wake County is accused of sex charges with youngsters while he was a teacher in Camden County.

Samuel Byers was charged Wednesday by Camden County deputies with five counts of felony indecent liberties with a minor and five counts of felony statutory sex offense with a minor.

Sheriff Tony Perry says the offenses happened from December 1999 to June 2000 while Byers worked in Camden County. He is now a teacher at Creech Road Elementary School in Wake County.

Investigators say they received an anonymous tip from Raleigh about the crimes. They say the sex offenses happened at Camden Middle School where Byers taught during the time.

An online professional profile says the man has taught in Wake County since August 2006.

Byers has a first court appearance on Friday in Camden. Perry says more charges in the case are expected.
