FIRST ON WITN: Hit & Run Suspect Turns Self In

Jacksonville Police said Friday, after television news reports covered a fatal hit and run, that driver has turned himself in.

49-year-old Michael Appleton, of Albany Drive in Jacksonville has now been charged in the hit and run death of Joseph Smith.

Police in Jacksonville said Appleton struck and killed the Vietnam War veteran on Highway 17 Wednesday night between Thompson Street and Cox Avenue.

"We would like to thank our broadcast media partners for their assistance in this case, which led to Appleton turning himself in to authorities" stated Lieutenant Sean Magill, Traffic Supervisor.

Appleton turned himself in, just before noon, at the Jacksonville Police Department. He is now in the Onslow County Jail under a secured bond.

Police in Jacksonville are looking for a hit and run driver who struck and killed a man on Highway 17 Wednesday night. It's the second pedestrian fatality on that highway in as many days.

60-year-old Joseph Smith of Jacksonville died at Onslow Memorial Hospital after being hit while attempting to cross the highway in the vicinity of Thompson Street and Cox Avenue.

Police say the vehicle is a small white car with possible damage to the front end and windshield. The vehicle was last seen traveling south toward Onslow Drive.

The hit and run happened just blocks away from another deadly pedestrian fatality on the same highway the night before. In that crash, a 55 year old woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck near the Onslow Drive intersection around the same time of night. In that accident the driver did stop and police say they are still investigating.
