A man who police say sped away from a drivers license checkpoint is behind bars facing 20 counts of various crimes.
Jacksonville police officers instructed 26-year-old Kendall Fields of Cole Drive to pull off onto the shoulder of the road when he couldn't produce a drivers license at a checkpoint on West Huff Drive Tuesday afternoon. When the officer approached the car, police say Fields sped away, heading south on Western Boulevard, to Liberty Drive, behind Brynn Marr Shopping Center and onto Village Drive. Police say Fields continued fleeing toward Western Boulevard and Brynn Marr Road.
Officers tried to get Fields out of his car when stopped in traffic at Brynn Marr and Western Boulevard, but he turned the vehicle, grazing the officer. Fields also hit two other vehicles as he drove off onto Country Club Drive and left onto Bell Fork Road. Fields abandoned the vehicle on Armstrong Dr. And surrendered.
The officer was not injured. The people the car that police say Fields hit also were not injured.
Fields is charged with Failure to Yield to Blue Lights and Siren, Failure to Reduce Speed, Driving Left of Center, Driving with License Revoked, Unsafe Lane Change, Hit and Run, Speeding, Careless and Reckless Driving, Red Light Violation, Improper Backing, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggressive Driving, Possession of Marijuana, Maintaining a Vehicle for Drugs, Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, and Felony Speeding to Elude.
Fields was booked under a $34,000 bond.
