Inspiring Message At Pitt County Crime Victim's Rights Week Event

This week is national crime victim's rights week and hundreds of people gathered at the Pitt County courthouse to mark the event Wednesday. Including a man whose wife was murdered.

Community members, political figures, and representatives of Pitt County law enforcement agencies were on hand. The event focused on recognizing the rights of victims and their families in the aftermath of a violent crime, and the resources that are available to help. Jeremy Hayes's wife was murdered in eastern North Carolina just over a decade ago, and he says no matter how hard it is to accept the loss, victims have to focus on moving forward.

"Find what life means to you. I found it in my son. Different people find it in different ways, and I can't tell you how to locate it, but I can tell you that you have to search your own soul." said Hayes.

You can contact the Pitt County Sheriff's Office for victims services.
