Greenville Mom Accused Of Trying To Drown Son In Bathtub

A mother is accused of trying to drown her six-year-old son in the bathtub.

Greenville police report officers were called to a home on Paige Drive Friday afternoon to a call of child abuse.

According to Greenville police, 25-year-old Shaquia Powell reportedly tried to forcibly hold the child under water. They report she later contacted a neighbor and told him about the attempt. Authorities say the neighbor then contacted Greenville Police and also contacted members of Powell’s extended family.

Powell was charged with attempted murder.

Police report Powell’s family members were on the scene and assisted police officers with the investigation.

They also say Powell was transported by EMS to Vidant Medical Center for evaluation and was later released then transported to the Greenville Police Department.

Police found that the child did not appear to be physically injured.

Officials say detectives from the GPD Special Victims Unit responded to the hospital and followed up on the investigation.

They report they consulted with officials from the Pitt County District Attorney’s office, and it was determined that Powell would be charged with First Degree Attempted Murder.

Powell was arrested and taken to Pitt County Detention Center where she is being held without bond pending a first appearance in court.
