FIRST ON WITN: Greenville Man Charged With Abusing Baby

A Greenville man is under arrest for a charge of child abuse. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office arrested 32-year-old Jonathon Nichols Monday on one count of intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury.

The victim in the case is the one year old child of Nichols' girlfriend, according to Christy Wallace, the spokesperson for the Pitt County Sheriff's Office. Wallace said the baby suffered a traumatic brain injury because of the abuse reported over the weekend. The baby was treated at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and released. However, Wallace said the baby's current condition is unknown.

Wallace said the abuse happened while the mother of the baby, Nichols' girlfriend, had left the boy with Nichols overnight. Investigators say the baby was abused at the home Nichols shares with his grandmother in Greenville.

We checked his record, and Nichols has no criminal convictions in the state of North Carolina.

Nichols is jailed under a $50,000 bond.
