An aide to the head of east coast Marines is facing multiple counts of exploiting children and now the FBI Cybercrimes Task Force is investigating.
Captain Daniel Nilsson was arrested last Wednesday by the State Bureau of Investigation on six counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor in Pender County. Nilsson is an aide to Lt. General John Paxton, commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force.
The SBI says the arrest came after allegations were raised that the Marine collected child pornography. Spokeswoman Noelle Talley says the FBI Cybercrimes Task Force is also working on the case.
Under North Carolina law, second-degree exploitation of a minor is when a person "records, photographs, films, develops, or duplicates material that contains a visual representation of a minor engaged in sexual activity; or distributes, transports, exhibits, receives, sells, purchases, exchanges, or solicits material that contains a visual representation of a minor engaged in sexual activity."
The 32-year-old Nilsson, who has been deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan, has been assigned to administrative duties at II MEF Headquarters Group.
The infantry officer also has pending DWI and other traffic charges pending in Carteret County.
