Former Pamlico County Deputy Heading To Prison

A former deputy at the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office will be heading to prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 38-year-old Robert Baker, Jr. of Arapahoe pleaded guilty to three charges related to illegal searches. Federal prosecutors say Baker conducted two illegal searches of homes and instructed other deputies to do so as well. He also pleaded guilty to illegally searching a motorist, who turned out to be an undercover officer.

Baker was fired from the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office as a result of the SBI investigation.

Baker was sentenced to 27 months in prison followed by one year of probation.

I agree, Bobby Baker is only the tip of a large, long lived iceberg that has been part of Pamlico Law Enforcement for decades. I really wish someone would come in and clean up the garbage, and there's lots of it.

Absolutely. I feel as if we the citizens do not matter to everyone that works there. I have called for help before and it took DAYS to get a response. The deputy who finally took the call was very apologetic and I am now sorry for speaking to him the way I did since he had only just found out about the call and another deputy just failed to take it. The Sheriff needs to be what he was elected to be and get involved in what's going on at his office. Our taxes pay for services, that these days if we call we don't know when we're going to get it, if at all. I love Pamlico, been here all my life, born and raised here, it could be so much better if they ALL cared.

I agree Sheriff Gibbs is doing the best job he can. The only problem is Sheriff Gibbs is working for retirement as we all are. The problem lies in his department and staff running the job as they want. A good examlpe is the deputy from Pitt that had an issue with that department and was hired by MC and later had a problem here. David Cross another example, don't know if he is guilty or not but a deputy out at night someone in that department knows where he and others are and should be logged in MC communications. There is a path somewhere. I hear of some of the interviews have and the truth is not being looked for only finding someone guilty. The dupty in this story is going to jail for an illegal seach, maybe Sheriff Gibbs needs to look at his own department. There is a few running their own department, their way and for their own gain. Maybe someday it will come out. Again Sheriff Gibbs is doing a good job, but he only knows what is staff is telling him and some of his staff needs replacing. The sheriff department is to protect and serve not to be served by the public.

In Washington County - The ale agent, the sheriff drug officer and the Plymouth drug officer do illegal searches on a regular basis telling the people they search if they complain they will arrest them on federal charges... All them need to be going to the same center as the Pamlico County deputy..

Bobby Baker going to prison would only be fair if about half the department went with him. Now in his place you have an "investigator" who was rehired only to party with underage people and drink and drive along with another deputy and a dispatcher..and then plaster it all over facebook. Are they going to have to kill somebody before anything happens to them? There's pictures all over facebook, and the sheriff is right there with's no secret. Pamlico needs an overhaul starting with the top. Mr Baker is serving his time, now worry about the ones that need to be. It's all about who you are and how much money your family has. Not work ethic. And that is sad.

It's a shame but many small towns are run by the good ol boy method. People on the force are usually local and them/family can do no wrong. La grange is on the top of my list of grimey officers.

Corruption of people that have gotten into LE work is rampant and getting worse. The only way to deal with it is to lock up the bad apples. That appears to be the only thing they understand.

Jones County also needs to be on the list for the SBI to check out. Daughter has bullet holes all over her roof and she can't even get this investigated due to all the friendships in this county (if you know what I mean)....
