Former Top MLB Draft Pick Faces Judge On Cocaine Charges

A Carteret County man who was once the number one Major League Baseball draft pick faced a judge Friday morning a slew of cocaine charges.

Deputies wrapped up an undercover operation with the arrest of Brien Taylor of Beaufort on Thursday.

Undercover narcotics agents say they purchased a large quantity of crack cocaine from Taylor over the last several months.

The 40-year-old Taylor played for East Carteret High School and was signed by the New York Yankees after the 1991 Major League Baseball draft. But Taylor never played for the team because of an arm injury. Instead, he pitched for several minor league teams.

Taylor is charged with multiple counts of trafficking cocaine. He's being held on a $275,000 bond. His next court date is March 23rd.
