Former City Employee Charged With Embezzlement

A former Rocky Mount city employee with over 29 years of service is accused of stealing from the city.

Gary Weeks is charged with nine counts of embezzlement by government officer, three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and felony larceny.

A Nash County grand jury indicted the former water treatment plant maintenance supervisor on Monday. City officials say they learned of possible embezzlement from a city employee and turned the information over to police who conducted a criminal investigation over several months.

City officials would not say how much Weeks is accused of taking from the city, nor how long the alleged embezzlement took place. "In view of this incident, our city management team will conduct a thorough review of our accounting controls and purchasing procedures and will be implementing additional necessary controls to prevent similar incidents in the future," said City Manager Charles Penny in a statement.

The 53-year-old Weeks was fired from his job on August 30th and was released today on a $110,000 bond. He has an October 24th court date.
