Former Trooper, Nurse Have Charges Dismissed In Prescription Case

Charges have been dismissed against a former Highway Patrol trooper and a registered nurse in an alleged prescription drug scheme that saw six people indicted.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says no reason was given in court for why the cases against former Sgt. Kevin Owens and Arron Jones were dropped.

The two were among six people arrested in Beaufort County last April.

Owens had been charged with obtaining alprazolam and zolpidem tartrate by misrepresentation, fraud and deception as well as aiding and abetting, while Jones was indicted for obtaining phentermine, alprazolam and oxycodone by misrepresentation, fraud and deception.

In January, two others in the case, Anna Moore and Lori Melton, had their charges dropped as well. Former Washington police officer Justin Mixon pleaded guilty to one count last October, while Amanda Bunch, a registered nurse practitioner, is still awaiting trial.
