Former Deputy Charged By SBI With Prescription "Doctor Shopping"

A former Onslow County deputy sheriff is on the other side of the law, accused of doctor shopping for prescription drugs.

Joseph Karaszewski has been charged with five counts of obtaining controlled substances by prescription misrepresentation.

Sheriff Ed Brown says last Wednesday he received a call from an SBI agent that they were investigating the deputy.

Brown says the next afternoon two SBI agents met with the deputy and afterward Karaszewski came to his office and told the sheriff that he was going to be charged with criminal acts. The deputy then gave the sheriff his immediate resignation.

Karaszewski had a first court appearance this morning and his bond set at $10,000.
