Five Years Since UNC Student Body President's Murder

Five years ago today, UNC-Chapel Hill's student body president, Eve Carson was murdered.

Police said on March 5th, 2008, Carson was spotted by Laurence Lovette Jr. and Demario Atwater.

Prosecutors said early that morning, the two young men took 22-year-old Carson in her 2005 Toyota Highlander to ATMs to withdraw money from her bank account.

Prosecutors said later, she was driven to a wooded area nearly a mile from the UNC campus and shot five times.

Atwater plead guilty in the case in May of 2010.

In December of 2011, Lovette was found guilty of first-degree murder in the case.

Both were set to serve life sentences without the possibility of parole until February of 2013, when the North Carolina Court of Appeals ordered a new sentencing for Laurence Lovette.

Since Lovette's conviction, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a mandatory sentence of life without the possibility of parole cannot be allowed for a defendant under age 18 when the crime was committed.

Carson was in a pre-med program at UNC on a Morehead-Cain Scholarship. The Athens, Georgia native has a standing scholarship at the university in her name.
