Emerald Isle Police Chief Out Of Hospital, Speaks To WITN

Emerald Isle Police Chief Bill Hargett is home from the hospital and recovering after he was injured this past week during a high speed chase.

WITN talked with Hargett at his home Sunday. Hargett says he is sore and bruised, but is otherwise doing okay.

Hargett was injured after three breaking and entering suspects crashed into his cruiser while trying to flee police officers.

Hargett was airlifted to the hospital. He broke his ribs and punctured a lung in the crash.

Hargett says he really doesn't remember much about that day but he does know one thing, that God was with him.

Hargett told WITN, "I know that somebody was riding with me that night in that car no one saw him but we all know he was there and I know by that I'm going to be okay."

Hargett says he expects to be back in uniform in a few weeks time..

The three suspects that ran into his patrol car, Marco Bullock, Stacy Peele and Kenneth Harrell, are facing at least 247 charges.

All three are due back in court December 16th.

Previous Story

Three Greenville men are facing at least 247 charges after Emerald Isle police say they were caught breaking into a beach home early Wednesday morning. A subsequent police chase injured Police Chief Bill Hargett, who is still hospitalized.

Stacy Peele, Kenneth Harrell and Marco Bullock appeared before a Carteret County judge Thursday morning on the charges which include 16 counts each of felony breaking and entering and 23 counts each of felony possession of stolen goods.

Now Emerald Isle police are coordinating with other agencies along the Outer Banks, as far north as Nags Head where at two of the men now face charges.

Bullock also is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official. Police say Bullock was the car's driver and that he tried to run over one of the surveillance officers over as he was making his getaway. Police say the Highway Patrol is investigating the chase and subsequent crash that injured the chief and troopers would bring any charges on that aspect of the case.

Chief Hargett is expected to be released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital soon, though no date is yet available when the chief might return to work.

A police chief injured in a high speed police chase is improving, as three Pitt County men appear in court on multiple charges.

Emerald Isle Police Chief Bill Hargett remains at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after an SUV he was chasing lost control and crashed into his cruiser early Wednesday morning. The town says the chief could be released in the next day or two.

The chief and other officers were involved in a surveillance operation of burglary suspects. When the officers tried to stop the suspects, they fled and the chase began.

Authorities say the chief tried to perform a rolling roadblock and the fleeing vehicle sideswiped his cruiser. Both vehicles flipped several times.

Marco Bullock, Stacy Peele and Kenneth Harrell appeared before a district court judge Thursday morning in Beaufort.

All three are facing over a dozen charges, including multiple second degree burglary and felony larceny counts. Bullock, who authorities say was driving the vehicle, is also charged with flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle.

Harrell's bond was increased to $250,000 because of prior convictions.

All three are due back in court December 16th.

Previous Story

Emerald Isle Police Chief William Hargett is at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after an SUV he was chasing lost control and crashed into his cruiser.

The Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, says the police chief has some internal injuries.

Police say a surveillance operation of burglary suspects culminated early this morning when officers observed three suspects loading stolen items into a Ford Explorer on Ocean Drive in Emerald Isle. When the officers tried to stop the suspects, the fled. A high speed chase ensued.

Officials say the driver of the Explorer lost control and crashed into the police car driven by Chief Hargett. Hargett was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Another suspect was taken to PCMH as well, while the third person was treated at Carteret General Hospital and released into police custody earlier this morning. That third suspect was found walking along Highway 58 in Salter Path several hours later.

Officials say all three suspects are from Greenville. Their names are Marco Bullock, Stacy Peele and Kenneth Harrell.

Authorities say Bullock was driving the car that hit the chief. While Bullock's car flipped upside down, Hargett's cruiser struck a concrete pole, flipped twice and landed upside down in a ditch.

The Highway Patrol says Hargett's injuries include a punctured lung and a concussion. They say his injuries are not life threatening.

Troopers say the chief was trying to perform a rolling road block when the crash happened. They say alcohol and marijuana are suspected factors in the chase, which had speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

Police say the trio are responsible for nearly 25 break-ins on the beach in the last month. They say the suspects would break in on the beach side of the homes and steal televisions and liquor.

Hargett has been chief of police in Emerald Isle since 2005, but he has been with the department for 32 years.

i have known stacy's mothers side of the family my entire life. And honestly you don't get any better! a very close nit family that would do anythng for anyone. Peoples actions are not always a result of their upbringing. Some just get around the wrong crowd and are easily influenced. I pray God will give them stregnth to get thru this and Stacy will turn his life around. Pray without stopping. That is what we are doing. Sometimes that is all anyone can do.

Should be an automatic bonus round when you hit 100 charges or more, you get a free spin on the gallows.

I know stacy very well, have known him since he was 11-12 years old. He is nothing but trouble, always has been and always will be because he refuses to grow up and make the right decisions. There is no sympathy here. He only got what was coming to him inevitably!! It was only a matter of time. You cant do wrong but for so long and it will catch up with you. This will hopefully teach him a lesson and he will learn from this and finally grow up. Fast money don't last or get you but so far. It is what it is!

I'm sorry about your brother getting into more trouble. I hate to say it but some time in jail would give them some time to think about things.
