Edgecombe County Magistrate Indicted On Embezzlement Charges

A local magistrate has been indicted on embezzlement charges.

Court calendars show 39-year-old Kevin Smith is facing three felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer or trustee. Smith is a magistrate in Edgecombe County. Smith is also facing charges in district court for worthless checks.

Noelle Talley with the NC Department of Justice says the Edgecombe County district attorney's office requested the investigation into Smith that led to the charges against him.

No other details about the accusations have been released.

Smith was released on a $10,000 bond.
